Mandate and Mission

Incorprated in March of 2005 The New Curtain Theatre Company saw its first production in April of 2006 withteh mounting of Cindy Lou Johnson's BRILLIANT TRACES. The impetus for its birth was to contribute to the social amenity and make up of one of the more positively developing towns on the east coast of Newfoundland by bringing professional theatre to the Clarenville area. This was initiated by its founding Artistic Managing Director, Geoff Adams, who returned to Newfoundland from a growing career in Vancouver to initiate this plan.

The mandate which NCTC presented for itself from beginning was that of:

“the bringing to the local stage the production of nationally and internationally acclaimed works of contemporary theatre, with an emphasis on Canadian work, providing a basis on which to build a strong regional theatre community similar to its cross-national counterparts.”

In addition to its primary mandate though New Curtain Theatre has set a number of other goals to entrench itself within the community:

“to provide a studio atmosphere for locals to explore the endeavors of the theatre "

“to develop a link to the education structure of the community through community outreach to the local through curriculum programming”

“to act as producer host to other shows travelling the province and reinstitute in the Clarenville area the B-Circuit of the Arts and Culture Centre circuit as well, to traveling our own productions out to other regions of the province.”

Company history

The birth of The New Curtain Theatre Company came about during the summer of 2004, when its Artistic Managing Producer spent time as a performer at the Gros Morne Theatre Festival in Cow Head, Newfoundland. As an actor in BC for the past 12 years, he saw a missing element in the theatre scene in Newfoundland, especially the semi-rural areas outside of St John’s, in particular the Clarenville region. With a desire to return to his home province, he endeavoured to establish Clarenville’s first professional theatre company.

In its four short years New Curtain Theatre has established itself as a permanent force within the region. The growth of the company has already been chartered through the track record of its productions and the support it is receiving from the community at large. We continue to keep our production levels moderate whereby, in an effort to be fiscally attentive, our cast sizes are being kept at four or below including the student element wherever possible. Its resume boasts 12 productions (six of the first nine shows being Canadian)., 5 studio sessions (both adult and youth), 3 successful fundraisers, community outreach programmes and 2 Shakespeare festivals as well as securing its own performance facility at the base of the local ski hill – White Hills Resort – where we are collaborating with a fellow not for profit organization to enrich the lives of the surrounding community. As well, NCTC has ventured into the schools with instructional sessions and touring shows, established a yearly production which honours our war veterans and have partnered with Veterans Affairs Canada to make this a success, hosting and collaborating other similar sized companies, presented our youth studios in a community production, incorporated some of our students in one of our professional productions and collaborated with the town in the establishment of a summer session of free open concerts during the months of July and August.
